Oakland A’s reliever John Axford was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a back-to-back injury Sunday as a result of a right shoulder injury.
The right-handed pitcher felt stiff after throwing a curve during Tuesday’s game warm-up and had no activity against Los Angeles.
This Wednesday he underwent an MRI. Manager Bob Melvin said Axford had no problem before the injury occurred.
“None, zero,” Melvin said. “It was a complete surprise not only for us, but for him as well.”
Right-hander Jesse Hahn was called to the big team, again, Triple A, from the branch in Nashville, to give depth to the bullpen. Oakland has six players on the disabled list, after last season had a record of 27 visits to that list. The club has had at least three players in DL every day since July 30, 2011, and have not had less than two since the 2006 season finale.
